Patios & Courtyards : Child-friendly
The client had commissioned a rear extension which would primarily require a new patio to be built at the same time, and for the rest of the garden to be updated. The brief was for a modern design with the raised patio area to be safe for young children (hence the brick wall to prevent toddlers from riding bikes over the drop). [NB: a planting plan was not included in this brief.] I designed an angled patio which is echoed by the zigzag decking path to the gazebo at the bottom of the garden that the children can cycle around. The pergola over the patio provides some shade in a very hot south-facing spot. The raised beds on the patio incorporate built-in seating and provide for a water feature in the next stage of development.
